The energy transition, a great transformation to a future carbon-free energy system, is coming into view in Dubai. The pieces – the fuels, the technologies and systems – were scattered somewhat randomly around Expo City, the site of Expo 2020 (2021-22) and the UN’s Cop28 (2023). But it required just a little imagination to put the pieces together in your mind, to begin to see what that future will look like.
In this special newly made city-district I saw symbolism, traced from the outer gates to the centre dome, making it a fitting place to display an aspirational future. The essay places it in the historic context of Expo aspirational cities, then comes to focus on one section where the sustainability pavilion and three smaller country pavilions stood in close proximity, together revealing methods and technologies that may prove critical for the future.
